Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) will launch a new low-cost carrier called Flyadeal.

The new airline, which is expected to begin operations in mid-2017, will be based in Jeddah and primarily serve high-density regional routes in the kingdom. 

“We expect to serve the main trunk routes including our capital Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam and key regional markets,” said Saudia director-general Saleh bin Nasser Al Jasser on Twitter. 

Jasser also confirmed that Flyadeal will operate as an independent entity from Saudia, and focus on point-to-point flights.

“Flyadeal will be a single-class, low-fare carrier, which means we are focused on getting people from A to B for a fair price,” he said.

While no announcement has been made regarding the type of fleet Flyadeal will operate, the airline’s new social media platform showcased an A320neo baring its livery.

The new low-cost carrier is part of Saudi Arabia’s plan to improve its air transport infrastructure. Saudia has embarked on an ambitious expansion project that will see its fleet increase from 119 aircraft to 200 by 2020.

The Skyteam member currently has 30 A320s, 20 A330-300s and four B787-9s on order.
